Blur Drummer Taking a Shot at Politics

Blur would like to remind everyone that they’re done. Through. Finished. Ceased to be. Bereft of life. Shuffled off this mortal coil, rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. They are an ex-band.

Damon and Graham have their musical projects. Alex James is making cheese for Prince Phillip. And drummer Alex Rowntree is running for office. Yes, he’s taking a run at politics contesting the riding for the Cities of London and Westminster in the upcoming British general election.

Dave—who is also deep into his training to become a lawyer—doesn’t give himself much of a chance. This constituents of this seat have lots of money and reliably vote Tory, so Dave’s Labour leanings probably won’t get him too far. However, Dave believes he has to give his brand of activism a shot.

"I'm not a betting man, but if I was, even I wouldn't bet on me winning. Activism is by its nature a slog, but it depends why you're doing it… I'm seeing where the problems are in my neighbourhood and trying to sort them out."
