Ramones The Movie

An upcoming memoir by JOEY RAMONE's brother, MICKEY LEIGH, is to be turned into a major movie about punk icons, The Ramones. Leigh is working on I Slept With Joey Ramone with rock writer Legs MCNeil, and, as soon as the book hits stores in December (09), filming will start on a biopic about the Blitzkrieg Bop hitmakers.

Ramone, real name Jeffrey Hyman, formed The Ramones in 1974 with John Cummings (Johnny Ramone), Thomas (Tommy Ramone) and Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone). They became the godfathers of punk.
Joey and Johnny were the constants in the group, which split in 1996. The two stars have since died.

Fox Searchlight the company behind films like Napoleon Dynamite and Juno, is reported to be in negotiations to be making the film. The film will be based on the forthcoming book 'I Slept With Joey Ramone' which is the biography of the legendary frontman and is written by Joey Ramone's brother Mickey Leigh and music journalist Legs McNeil.

The project has been rumoured since 2006, when producer Rory Rosegarten snapped up the film rights to the book.

As well as the film rights Rosegarten also negotiated a deal with Joey Ramone's mother Charlotte Lesher executor of his estate, which would allow him to use the group's music in the biopic, film industry newspaper Variety reports.

The Ramones were previously the subject for the acclaimed 2003 documentary 'End Of The Century'
